Siding Replacement Case Study

  • Client: Single-family homeowner (HOA)
  • Location: Katy, TX (Greater Houston)
  • Duration: 2 working days
  • Scope: Full tear-off and architectural shingle roof replacement; ventilation and flashing upgrades
Overview

Project summary

Repeated wind events and age-related granule loss left the roof vulnerable to leaks at valleys and wall transitions.

J&J Roofing and Siding delivered a spec-driven replacement with upgraded underlayments, metal flashings, and balanced ventilation.

The new system passed inspection on the first visit and included registered manufacturer and workmanship warranties.

Goals

  • Replace aging roof with a wind-rated system appropriate for Gulf Coast weather
  • Eliminate chronic leaks at sidewall flashing and plumbing penetrations
  • Improve attic ventilation to reduce heat load and extend shingle life
  • Complete work with minimal disruption and spotless cleanup

Constraints

  • Tight driveway access and adjacent landscaping required careful staging
  • Afternoon pop-up storms common; deck protection and daily dry-in were mandatory
  • HOA-approved shingle color and profile

Constraints

  • Tight driveway access and adjacent landscaping required careful staging
  • Afternoon pop-up storms common; deck protection and daily dry-in were mandatory
  • HOA-approved shingle color and profile

Assessment & Findings

  • Granule loss and curled tabs on south and west slopes; UV exposure accelerated wear
  • Improper step/counter flashing at a second-story wall; sealant-only repair previously failed
  • Aged pipe boots and brittle sealants at multiple penetrations
  • Insufficient exhaust ventilation; no continuous ridge vent
